Design, Navigation & Technology - Colgate Kid's World Website

This site is a fairly easy one to use. The graphics and language employed are quickly understood. The emphasis appears to have been on simplicity, and the dissemination of information on dental hygiene in a fun way. Aimed at younger children, the web site does a fair job of educating them. It ought to hold their interest.

Design:

The Kid's World site has been visually designed keeping the target audience in mind. The audience would be younger children aged 4 to 9, in the process of acquiring good brushing habits. The choice of graphics, like the cartoon-like characters would appea l to them. The layout is simple and is composed of information, games and other fun activity. The design suits the product - tooth paste fairly well. Kids would also find the idea of the password interesting, in order to enter the "clubhouse". Password at entrance

Navigation:

The Kid's World site is straightforward and easy to use. It has been created and structured for children, who need it to be that way. There is no problem in finding things. The main page does not, however, give an indication of the size of the site. We mi ght get a clue from the "clubhouse" graphic though. As it turns out, the site is not very large and is easy to navigate. Section index of the site
There are links to the clubhouse activities page from each section, be it art, coloring, the games, fun facts or the tooth fairy section. The option for further navigation are clear, and one does not get lost in a maze. It is possible to proceed step by s tep and navigate the entire site. Options for starting each game/facts section over again are also available. However in the storybook coloring section, one had to keep leaving the story in order to color. Continuity was, therefore lost.

Technology:

The technology used in this site does not hinder our use of it. Except for the jungle game, where we have to download the shockwave application. Otherwise the graphics did not take much time to download. Particularly, the storybook coloring section (color ing alone) was quite innovative, where one could just select a color and paint a section of the picture. Example of coloring.

Conclusion:

The Colgate Kid's World site, I think, is definitely of interest to children. For the above reasons, they should not have trouble using it. It is also educative on dental hygiene, especially for younger children. However, they may not come back if the sec tions on the site do not change often. Regular users would look for new additions and changes/updates daily.
